This book is written from experience, both personal and professional. It is about breaking the cycle of domestic violence, to keep our children safe for the future.

As parents, we don’t know what we don’t know. We can only make our decisions based on what experience has taught us. I reflect on the SBS program from the National Geographic Documentary Film, Diana: In Her Own Words

. And I quote: ‘He wanted to try and have a home life of some sort, but he didn’t know how to do it. He had never been taught so the whole thing just evaporated.’

My vision is to make a difference, to give parents insights, to equip educators with early intervention and prevention tools and to give children a voice.

Brian is a little boy who loves his mum, dad and dog, but struggles with his dad’s violence when he comes home from working in the mines.

The impact on him when this happens escalates until it is time to ‘unsecret’ and tell his teacher what is happening, giving him a voice to acknowledge the ‘feelings in his belly’.

Brian’s dad really wants to be the best dad he can be, and undertakes his journey to ensure that this family is happy and healthy, both physically and emotionally.

"A child's happiness is a very unfair burden to place on a parent. And happiness is an even more unfair burden to place on a kid."Black Tears was written through the eyes of a child, to give the kids of today a voice.
